It all started about a week ago... Scottie, my family's first real pet, became sick. At least, noticeably sick enough to go to the vet. Turns out his liver was failing. We had no idea. He gradually stopped eating and spent a few days at the vet's office hooked up to an IV. We were trying to get him healthy enough to be able to take medicine and hold down food on his own so he could come home. We held out hope that he would pull through. After all, he wasn't even 11, so why shouldn't he have some time left?
As a week approached we began to realize a difficult decision would have to be made. It was hard. When we went to visit him he gave us every ounce of energy he had just to show he recognized us and was doing his best to hang on. After talking to the vet and knowing they had done everything they could on their end we decided to bring him home and see what would happen. Unfortunately he didn't progress. In fact, he even lost interest in drinking water which we knew was the last sign to watch for before the end was near. All we could do at this point was love him and give him as much comfort as possible. We knew the next day would be his last.
When my mom checked on him this morning she realized that his dog tag with his name and information had come off his collar during the night and was laying on his pillow. We're still not sure how it came off, but it brought a small degree of comfort as some sign that he was ready to let go. Scottie has been a member of our family for almost 11 years. He was a good dog. Always patient and ready to do whatever you wanted him to at a moments notice. One really couldn't have had a better companion. One of his favorite pasttimes was chasing us as we rode four wheelers. I think those were some of his happiest moments. They say dog is man's best friend and today my family lost a dear friend. So Scottie dog, here's to you:
